Yeah that's one thing that bugged me. IoG had no currency system. The only reference to Gems was the name of the Jeweler.

LOL. IoT doesn't show any formal currency system, really. Gem and his Red Jewels are not an available option to the rest of the populace, only to Will.

Does that mean then, that maybe IoT eschews the notion of currency completely in favour of a purely Communist society? Nothing is bought, only shared.
(OK, that's rubbish I know, the Rolek makes loads of money for the people running, and Communism wouldn't need slave labour if everything were going well).
But it's still a thought...

Maybe Wills relatives just forgot to give him an allowance before he left.

"No I can't give you any gems, but here's a lovely little tune that will be your exclusive puzzle solving tool."

"I'd rather have the gems."

i think that the IoG world is just poor, they have no money and that's why it's medievil style, because the IoG world owes dark Gaia like 9 million gems or whatever, and so because they can't pay up DG infests their home with rats (i.e. monsters) and so will has to go beat up DG mafia style (baseball bat) and make DG forget the debt, once will did that the IoG world could carry on with an okay economy and eventually thrive into a more modern type of place.

Very Happy

Which I however wouldn't like. Middleage was a harsh, but also quite fun time. Today you need state-of-the-art equipement and a staff of a few hundred people to make yourself a name by proving a theory or inventing something of any worth. A few hundred years ago a proper education and a picknick under an apple tree was enough already. Times have changed and things got more and more complicated and complex as life became "easier". However I pretty much doubt society at a larger scale could ever function with neither a currency nor a working economy.

IoT is good as it is. Development isn't all good, sometimes it's better to just stay with what you have rather than aiming ever higher and risk to loose everything.

PS this is not sarcy or a joke, he may not know what he's talking about but he has a damn good point either way, modern society sucks, it's boring, complex and too easy, we need to bring back the good times...
