I wish I were fluent! But I can speak/read/write in French, Japanese, and Russian. I'm currently trying to teach myself Swedish and Dutch. I'm pretty damn good at Japanese, though.

God! Can you imagine how conoluted the Japanese-Al Bhed strain was?

Actual question I had to ask somebody when I was in Tokyo:
"Sumimasen. Chotto nihongo wakarimas. [Shinkansen] doko desu-ka?"
(which means "Excuse me. I speak little Japanese. Where is the Shinkansen?")


In Japanese-Al Bhed Strain:
"Cisesycah. Lruddu heruhku fygynesyc. Shinkansen tugu taci-gy?"

You forgot the "u" at the end of -masu, there. For us it might seem weird for them (and I'm not sure how Al Bhed worked in the Japanese release of the game, it could have been a lot different since Japanese isn't a one letter language, it's based into "ka, ki, ku, ke, ko" save for the vowels) to have it so strange. I might have to look it up later.

Pronounciation tip number 1:

In japanese, if the end of a word is -su, do not pronounce the u at the end:

i.e desu is pronounced "des", masu is pronounced "mas".


However if the end of a word is -tsu, you do pronounce the u at the end.

i.e. Shiatsu is pronounounced "SHEE-aht-zoo".



Also here's your "I'm stuck in tokyo and I need help" guide:

Sumimasen- SOO-me-mah-zen
The equivalent of "excuse me" or "pardon"

Arigato (Gozaimas)- AH-ree-gah-to (go-SAI-mas)

Equivalent of "undestanding" or "to understand".


So literally this phrase means "little japanese (language) [ i ] understand."

(Do you understand English?)

Broken down:

Eigo- AY-go
[i] Eigo means "english", the way Nihon means "japanese". You add "ga" at the end to signify language for one basic reason. Otherwise it would be eigogo, which apparently sounds weird. So remeber, if the base ends in "go", then "ga" means language. Add "jin" for person or culture as you would normally do.

Ka
The japanese question mark. Adding ka to the end of a statement turns it into a question.

So literally this means: "English language [do you] understand?"


3. [Noun] Doko Desu-ka?
(Where is [noun]?)

Broken down:

Doko- DOH-koh
Means "where"

Desu- DES
"It" or "Is"... the verb of being.

So literally this means: [noun] where is?

Just because the word ends in 'su' doesn't necessarily mean it won't be spoken. Also, it's always spelled "desu" or "-masu", no matter if the 'u' is silent. I say this because I've heard plenty of Japanese speakers pronounce the 'u' at the end, including my Japanese teacher who is Japanese.

Sumimasen is just that: "SUE-mee-mah-sehn". "Arigatou gozaimasu" is already a polite form, as is "domo arigatou". If you say the complete "Domo arigatou gozaimasu" (which isn't go-sai-masu, it would be 'go-zai-masu' ), it's seen as super formal, and usually used in businesses and with your grandmother.

Daijoubu should be spelled with that extra 'u', since the 'o' is a long 'o'.

On the flipside of "I know a little Japanese", if you say "Wakarimasen", that means you don't understand. "Watashi wa Nihongo wakarimasen" would be "I don't understand Japanese."

Also, it should be "Watashi doko desu ka?" since you'd be asking a question.

i still want to learn japanese, but havent had the motivation to go buy anything that would help. well i have enough reason to want to, but i never get around to it

Oh yeah my guide there was the stuff I picked up before my tokyo trip and I knew it was a little fugged up. My mom is an incredibly fluent speaker though. She reads, writes ans speaks in fluent japanese and has a japanese pen pal.
