So I've been playing alot of SNES lately (as always) and have picked up some old games that I missed out on. Namely Earthbound and Metroid II (I have a Super Game Boy, so that second one does count ) I very much enjoyed Earthbound. It kind of makes me sad that we only got the second game here in the states...
I'm still playing Metroid II, but so far its very nice. The music could be a bit more lively, but you know... I'm a sucker for old-school Game Boy games, lol.
So what about you guys? Picked up any games recently that you missed out on back in their respective eras? _________________

hmm, i'd have to choose the gameboy consoles, they just have more metroid games on them and as far as i'm concerned they have a big replay factor compared to other games
i could play metroid fusion 999 times without getting bored, and still probably not even dare to go on to the next difficulty
no, i lie, i have played on easy + normal, and for zero mission i tried hard mode but i just haven't got enough energy and missiles to beat ridley... it's pathetic i know |

yeah nextgen suxx ... glad I still have my SNES from the old days . However the best thing about the newer gen consoles (wii, ps2, etc.) is them allowing emus to play the games of better times *g*. _________________ AtW Studios

As far as I'm concerned, the SNES was the golden age of gaming. Zelda: LttP and FF6 are just two (of many) gems that came from that era, and are among what I consider the greatest games ever made.
Every generation brings its top-quality titles, but I don't think any generation has matched the SNES years in terms of sheer number, lasting appeal or overall quality. _________________

Let's face it. When it comes to enjoyable, memorable games, not to mention the console's track record of hosting a solid lineup of the above, nothing compares to the SNES.
The Atari was a great system, of course, and the breakthrough of the home videogame, but it was from a time before videogames had loveable characters, memorable stories and enchanting scores.
The NES can be given the same accusation, but it did premiere such legends as Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, Metroid and many others.
The SEGA franchise had basically two good game series, Sonic and Phantasy Star. The Dreamcast had Evolution. That's the end of that story (although Sonic Adventure 2 is probably in my top 10 videogames list.. but i'd still take the GC version over the dreamcast.)
The Game Boy was okay... but I'm not really a portable game kind of guy. I love the consoles.
Here's my salute to the badass SNES games that made us all miss countless hours of school and social interaction:
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
SoulBlazer
Illusion of Gaia (Time)
Terranigma
Secret of Mana
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country
Final Fantasy II (IV)
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Mech Warrior
Star Ocean
Chrono Trigger
Mario Paint
Congo's Capers
Thunder Spirit
Super Mario Kart
Cannon Fodder
Lawnmower Man (Damn that was a good game, even though the movie sucked)
And many more... _________________ Support me on Patreon!

Funny you forgot Tales of Phantasia ... perhaps graphic-wise the most advanced game ever released for the SNES ~.~. Well and the Lufia's are worth a mention too I guess .
I'm still puzzled why the dreamcast lost in the race to the top since to my mind technically it just entirely wiped the GC and PS2.
Nowadays you got the choice between 3: The Wii which is a nice white brick on my desk (since it's been ages since the last interesting new game came out) ... the XHoax360 with a dvd drive easily able to outperform a running jet engine in terms of noisiness ... and the ps3 an uberpowerful rounded brick with no games .... If the XHoax360 wasn't so fragile and a bit less noisy I might actually think about buying one since atm it seems to have the most promising games. _________________ AtW Studios

I would say the 16-bit systems, more specifically, the SNES. If you take the best RPGs from the Super and Genesis, I think they still hold up well against many of the RPGS for the next gen systems. There are so many games from the era I still haven't had the chance to play which I would really like to at some point (Lufia 2). Even the other genres did real well; I still like to play Sonic 1 and 2 (the music in those games is awesome). |
