Back in the day, RPGlunatic and myself had a website called Earthbound Invasion. This is def. one of my favorite games ever made. And I also think it is the first RPG I ever beat. |

Whatever happened to that website? _________________ "...at first it's fine and you think you have a dark side – it's exciting – and then you realise the dark side wins every time if you decide to indulge in it. The lufia 2 website was all RPGlunatics. And sadly they got deleted once homestead decided to start charging people for websites. |

Lufia 2 = Amazing.
Earthbound = Overrated.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Earthbound, but it feels rather dated (even for its time). _________________

I enjoyed Earthbound quite a bit. It had a few unique gameplay concepts that surprisingly didn't catch on. The one that always stood out for me was that once you were significantly strong than an enemy the game auto-resolved the combat and gave you the money and xp.
I remember listening to my Queen album "It's a Kind of Magic" while playing EB. So much so that when I hear those songs I think about the game. _________________ My Crystalis Fan Site - www.crystalis.info |

Personally, I think it's underrated. It only ever achieved a cult classic status, and never really got the widespread attention it should have.
The only thing I found dated on it was the graphics, which was an intentional stylistic choice; if they could make such mesmerizing battle backgrounds, they could have made the sprites more detailed. To me, Earthbound was one of the earlier examples of the graphics debate; they set out to show that a simple game can keep a player engaged through its less tangible elements.
And yes, they did introduce a few concepts that I wish had stuck for more RPGs. The fleeing enemies on the map, the rolling HP meter, etc. _________________

Fleeing monsters and Rolling HP were awesome, but the battle system as a whole just screamed NES Dragon Quest. The style and humor were really the only things keeping me playing. The game was very demanding and never forgiving. _________________
