We're getting... sorta clsoe to Halloween and I wanted to talk about "scary" games. I don't count Resident Evil, because it never really scared me (albeit I only played a bit of 2, 3 and 4).
Silent Hill games scare the crap out of me and I've never picked up a controller on one, except for a brief stint of Silent hill 3. I've seen others play it though and it's creepy as hell.
The only "scary" game I've completed on my own is a little backwater game called Extermination . This game, for being so action-oriented, scared the crap out of me. It instilled a sense of psychological thriller, added simple mechanics which meant more bang for your buck, but allowed a certain degree of freedom.
The journal fragments and articles you could pick up and read along the way made it even scarier, some of the enemies were downright gruesome, and best of all this game was genuinely scary.
Not just on a "I'm watching a scary movie" level, but also in the sense of immersion you get when playing a game. Limited health and ammo make you have to play it safe, and walking into a dark corridor filled with monsters you can't see will kick your self-preservation instincts into overdrive (often causing you to slam the trigger and waste ammo, which hurts you later on).
If you haven't played it, I highly reccomend it at least once.
(I once wrote a complete walkthrough of the game, but it has dissapeared off the face of the planet, which makes me sad... )
Anybody know any other good scary games?

Ever try the Exmortis games? They're just point and click flash games, but they're quite gory. _________________

Fatal Frame. Those games are TERRIFYING. The first and the second are really awesome with the scary, but the third is just. udiyfusagdyuhs
You're armed with a camera while walking through haunted places that have weird ancient rituals to ward off evil spirits. The third game is one I've been playing with a friend, and there are so many times we've freaked out while playing, it's not even funny.

Resident Evil was scarier when it was one of the very few horror games. And besides, it wasn't scary- it had it's jump moments, of course, like when the zombies grab you from the window in RE2, or when the dogs jump through windows in RE3, or even when Mr. X shows up on the computer monitor.
The scariest game I've ever played?
Barbie. For the NES. _________________ "...at first it's fine and you think you have a dark side – it's exciting – and then you realise the dark side wins every time if you decide to indulge in it. You do not truly know fear. I've played Dr. Franken for the SNES.

So I found the scariest game on the planet if your a girl and the funniest if your a guy.
Clock Tower 3.
My sister was playing this game where you're running through a creepy town avoiding a hammer-slaughtering goon while hiding and trying not to panic. It reduced her to a screaming, crying, shaking JPOP creature, which made all of us guys laugh our asses off. She actually had to take a break and my roommate Jacob (a male nurse) took her pulse and it was 120 BPM! She was for real, going into shock.
The only thing that scared us guys is why a girl who is supposedly 14 looks so hot. _________________ Current Avatar commissioned work by Seiken Arts.

I've heard some scary things about those games. I don't like stuff where I have to run from monsters.
I still stand by Fatal Frame.
Rule of Rose is pretty "...WHAT D:" inducing if you play it. Creepy kids, anyone? _________________

- Silent Hill series is the greatest in horror games. The first game, even with its blocky graphics achieved a sensation of terror never seen before in games. The second game has an amazing story (which isn't very related to the Silent Hill story like 1 and 3, but is more focused on the characters) and has the best atmosphere; the third one is more bloody, and I didn't play 4 and 5.
- Also played the first Fatal Frame and it's great too, if I have time I'll try the sequel.
- Clock Tower series is good, but the scissor guy is so creepy, I can't stand being chased all the time, and sometimes you don't know exactly what to do or where to go so I just played them for an hour or two. (I played the original SNES Clock Tower and its PSX sequel).
- Now, the hidden gem: Echo Night. It's a first person adventure, but there is no shooting. You travel in time and space to relieve the pain of tormented souls, but there is a main story behind all the problem solvings of the ghosts. Sometimes it feels like you are in a dream, but I felt really sucked in the game. _________________
