Vampires have always been romanticized. Dracula the character has been both shown as both a monster and a creature with a sexual appetite. Anne Rice has also done the same thing, made vampire creatures very sexual in nature.
Since sex=bad in tweenage range, someone took the time to ::coughshittilycough:: write a vampire book for tweens. If became popular because little girls love star-crossed lover stories- Romeo and Juliet and Titanic come to mind.
