It could be for any number of reasons. Maybe they didn't feel it was worth investing time and money in to, and would rather focus on something else. Maybe (like I said earlier), they see it as taking away sales of their games. Maybe you're right with what you just said.... it's their property, and they don't want anyone using it. That's completely within their rights. _________________

Or maybe they're planning their OWN remake of the game. Plus, these guys didn't even ask permission to do this. The worst that could have happened is SE saying "Um, no." to them, instead of them getting the cease and desist letter.

Like I've been saying, SE isn't acting childish over something that is copyrighted to their company. Plus, who's to say it was SE who sent the cease and desist order? Perhaps it was their lawyers breathing down their backs for it. _________________

That would be awesome if they were but even if this was so, they would probably have said somewhere 'We have a secret project we are working on' since they haven't come out right and said they were working on this. _________________

Once they released it to the gaming public, it'd kind of blow their cover. And then they'd be sued for not listening to the C&D order.

@ Aoiga: If they announced they were working on a secret project, it wouldn't really be secret... _________________

The point is that they think that they will lose money with those people doing that. So corporate like.

For me is debatable if doing this is right, morally speaking. They know the game has fans, and they killed the fandom. They know how fans will feel. They think that money is more important than that. Of course depends on how much money we are talking about here :p |

Because it is.

Any company is out to make money. A company might say the fans are their top priority, but they're not. Money matters, because it keeps the company in business. Fans matter because they have money.

SE may have felt they'd lose sales / money over it, so they shut it down. Maybe not the most popular course of action, but they thought it was in their own best interest. _________________

Maybe SE could of slapped their name on a demo version of the game and seen the popularity of it. And besides, would one little game put them out of business? Square had some rough patches before but it's not that bad. I think they have too much on thier plate as of yet and should maybe only focus on half of what they are currently doing. _________________

There IS a reason why the merged with Enix: money problems. So yes, one little fan game would spawn into a zillion fan games. If they allowed one, people would bitch and whine that "Someone else got to do it, why can't I?!" if they tried to stop the project. If they don't allow one, that will discourage others who try so the people who try after that won't have to get a cease and desist letter. So they would eventually lose money since hat game was non-profit, why pay for the original when there's a free version of the same game on the net?

They'll lose money if they allowed this project. Yeah, they could have slapped their name on it, but it would have lost the title of "fan made for the fans". _________________

A lot of companies do a "We're working on a game, but we won't tell you any details until we're ready to."

A couple companies have done this. Hell, for all we know, SE trademarked the name "Chrono Break" to make the 3D Chrono Trigger. _________________

And then SE will look up the IP's of those who downloaded the game and press charges for owning an illegal game. Therefore it would still be a bad idea to even think of continuing with the development. _________________
