You should be able to save from the menu.

EDIT: Yup, thar it was. I either need to get my vision checked, or my brain.  Prolly both.

Just a quick note, since SBF had that trouble with the boulders:
The sign says not to touch them, and warns about different coloured ones. Listen to the warning (especially late in the game). Touching them is a bad idea.

I figured there might be a boss or something, so I went into it figuring there was some random encounter. My mistake.
