It aired Halloween day 1938 if I am correct. I have been an H.G. Wells fan for sometime now and I own a CD of the broadcast. I could rip it for you all if you want.
The radio program subtley mentioned it was a presentation, but orchestra played right after it. People thought 'The war of the worlds' was the actual music played by the orchestra instead of the 'emergency' broadcast that followed.
I never heard of any mass suicides though, and I have followed the story for some time now.
