They weren't locked underground forever. That said...

Blazer was sent back down to Lisa (why? They weren't really in love were they?) with a memory-wipe.
Will and co. got stuck living in a world totally unlike the one they'd grown up in (did their memories change with it? In which case, they wouldn't feel so out of place on new Earth at the end)
Ark did eventually get reborn right at the end - was that light Ark or dark Ark though? Or some fusion of 'em?

I would vote for Dark and Light Gaias to both leave us alone and let things happen by blind chance; it couldn't be any worse than what happened to Neotokio, could it?

Ark pretty much went into hibernation, and there was no indication that he'd ever wake up (except for in Terranigma 2)

Blazer was so dull we never knew what he was thinking, i dunno, maybe he just liked whacking things with his sword, but i'm pretty sure lisa sorta fel in love with blazer (does it matter?)

Will and co. were retards as they wanted a modern society and thus don't matter (seriously, fighting monsters is waaaaaaaaaay better than work)
