Oh my gosh, so many people dead...

It is heart wrenching. Sad

I wish I could go there to comfort the victim's families. I am just in a state of shack and awe... This was 7x larger than the WTC... It's so bizarre and scary! Think of ho many people commited suicide after seeing all their friends and family get swallowed up in the waves...

These are the times that try people's souls. Crying or Very sad

Good thing is, thank God, that it's something natural, tsunami's. Not that it brings back all those dead people. Sad But atleast it's better than terrorism.

In the first half of the 20th century, more than 120 million people were killed by wars, pandemics and ethnic and political cleansing. In the second half, the US killed hundreds of thousands of people around the globe. Nobody knows how many people died because of the Third Gulf War. In Sudan, a terrible genocide is going on.

Death has become cheap in this world.[/quote]

Trie a philosophical approach.

There maybe was a time when the people in Johannesburg sighed under their lampshades when they read in the newspapers that two little girls had died in the freezing ice of Alaska. If these times ever existed, they will never return. Death has become cheap, very cheap. If thousand people die, the death of the individual is rendered irrelevant. Millions of men and women died in this century, shouldn't eighty thousand death be rendered irrelevant too?

Maybe they shouldn't. But if you cried the hundredth of a tear for a every human who dies, you would never stop crying.

History is a story of universal suffering. Where is the power of Carthage, where are the mighty Hittites, where are the Phrygians?

I understand the logic of your feelings, Mr. Guest, but I believe the reason you feel this way is because they don't show dead bodies on TV. If they showed all the 80,000 dead bodies on TV - mangled, bruised, and bloated - you would have more of a grasp of the situation. Even more so if you saw the families crying and hugging their lost family members' bodies. To show all the bodies in all the ways they died would be a truly horrific experience for a society that has grown to view dead bodies as being 'gross'. Not very likely of happening, I think.

This is a situation in which you have thousands of people who have lived in these coastal towns their entire life. They may have never been anywhere else. In alot of cases - this tsunami could have taken most (if not all) of the people they ever knew. In a disaster in which 1-5,000 people died, you could say, 'I lost person x in trajedy y and it is very sad'. But these people could say, 'I only know if person x survived the trajedy. I have lost everything'.
