This is a bit more on a personal level. As much as I enjoy video games, my true passion growing up had been horror movies. My parents had been essentially the same way- they grew up as teens in the 80's, when psycho killers like Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers were the mainstream.

I missed a majority of that, being I wasn't born until 1986 and didn't quite get into this stuff until I was three- yes, three. Heck, I dressed up as Freddy for Halloween at three- much to my younger brother and sisters' horror.

Now, with that out of the way, I wanted to talk about the word that digusts any movie fan to the core; the dreaded REMAKE. It seems like Hollywood has officially ran out of every good idea- for instance, the recent horror film Stepfather was a REMAKE. They've remade, in the last ten years, at least a two dozen horror films. Not that I'm saying sequels aren't any better- a Lost Boys sequel definately wasn't needed, and neither is the third film, but I'd rather a sequel than a remake.

I'm not entirely sure how many of you actually watch movies, especially horror, but the recent remakes of Halloween (And it's sequel) and Friday the 13th were horrendous. While the originals are amongst my favorites, my alltime horror icon is still Freddy, and the impending remake is getting me sick to my stomach. I'm not sure if I could express in words how angry it makes me that they would do such a thing. Yes, I understand the concepts of capitalism, but fans don't want remakes, they want continuation.
The studios will go and blame the fans for not coming out and seeing the next installment of a series- when they should be blaming themselves. Instead of taking the time to make a worthy sequel, they would instead put out any piece of trash with the title and a number attached to it. We don't want to spend our hard earned cash to see an inferior product, so how does it help when the studios are releashing a "Reimagining" that is just as shitty as a low-rent sequel might've been?

This all started, of course, when I read it was decided they would remake a film called Monster Squad. It is a small cult classic, about kids who fight against a half-assed version of the Universal Monsters. While the monsters did look good, thanks to Stan Winstons' effects, the film isn't that great, but my childhood fondness of the film never died.

Now they want to remake it so, what, some execs can line their pockets? I feel it's an insult to the fans of the original. I get the concept- bring the film in for a new generation- but all I want, as a fan, is to see a remake that is actually as good or if not better than the original.

Instead, we get garbage like Halloween, and, as much as I thought that was the worst remake ever, they then gave us a sequel which was somehow even worst than the original. I thought people learned from their mistakes, not intentionally made worse ones.

Tell me your thoughts on remakes/reimaginings. You've seen mine. Very Happy

I wanted to laugh, but I couldn't. It's not funny, it's just downright wrong.

But I will say this; is it necessary to remake the Fly a third time? The first one is a classic horror film from the 50's. The 80's remake by David Cronenberg was phenomenal, thanks the the modern technology of the time. And more recently, Cronenberg stated a second remake was in the works- but he only trusted himself to remake the movie he already remade. Confused If that makes any sense.

The King of Unnecessary Sequels: Disney

Seriously. Did Cinderella REALLY need more after the original movie? NO.

Did Little Mermaid need more after the original movie? NO.

The only movie worth getting more movies is the Toy Story line, and I'm completely serious.

As an aside @Jason: nah. Rule 34, my good sir. Very Happy

Disney is really bad for unnecessary movies (though sequels, rather than remakes).

Cinderella, Bambi, I'm pretty sure Lady and the Tramp, Lion King, and even a few completely unnecessary spinoffs starring secondary characters. It speaks volumes about how much faith they have in these movies when most of the sequels went straight to DVD.

A remake can be fine, as long as it's not a remake of something that's been released in the last 15 years. You want to remake something? Take something that hasn't been done for 30 years or more, and update it. Put the time and effort in to making it a worthwhile remake, while still preserving what made it so awesome the first time.

There are way too many remakes lately, and I suspect it's because it's a lot easier to start off with an idea already laid out for you than to come up with something original yourself.

Sequels pretty much always suck unless they are done right.

Disney pretty much did that to every successful movie adaptation they made.

some of disney's sequels were pretty good (lion king 1 1/2... oh epic win!) but god, pocahantas 2, tarzan 2, all happy-go-lucky crap with nothing else. call it a pokemon syndrome or something, where nothing decent happens. and ends in a sunset. eew

the best disney sequel (other then toy story2) is Alladin: Return of Jaffa... the 3rd Alladin on the other hand is terrible.

The 3rd lion king isnt even a sequel, its the first movie from a different perspective.

Disney has ran out of stories to rip off and now have to rely on making crappy sequels and the odd 'original' movie; the good years of disney movies are long gone, but disney has so much money now they dont really care.

EDIT - POST 500! AWWWWWW YEAH

WTF?

I loved Aladdin 3!

The only Disney sequels I think are worth any salt are Peter Pan 2 and...

...
...
...Pooh's Grand Adventure?

Okay, so yeah, I can't think of any non-Pixar Disney movies that were GOOD. Aladdin 2 & 3 and Peter Pan 2 were decent, but you know...

That's all I have to say. I love Jackie Chan, but... SERIOUSLY? Next thing you know, they'll be remaking Back to the Future. Neutral

...:/

There have been plans to remake Back To The Future. In fact, Michael J Fox was approached to possibly appear in it- as Doc Brown. Scared

I heard about this remake- but I had no idea how bad it was actually going to be. Until now.

I guess they'll remake anything if they think it'll make money.
