I've been loosely following the World Cup lately because all my friends are obsessed with it. Basically just watching how America is doing.

And psychokind, I saw Germany go against Ghana. You guys have a pretty good team.

there are 8 grouphs (A to H), each with 4 teams in it. these are the preliminaries (participants are determined in games before the world cup).
each group plays against the other 3 member of the group. the winner and the 2nd of the group makes it into the last 16.

after that it's just a knockout system. for example:

winner group A against 2nd group D
2nd group D wins, he's in the quarters.

so you got 8 in the quarters, 4 in semifinals and 2 in the final. the 2 losers of the semifinals play against each other for 3rd place.
