Okay here are my top 10 favorite Main Themes from video games. These are what I consider the best musically speaking, not about the quality of the game itself.

10. Castlevania Vampire Killer

This song started great and has aged quite well. Hearing this song was just a big hell yeah for me when I played the NES version. It psyches you up, and that's what a good main theme should do. To me the best Main Themes are the ones that make you go "Hell Yeah" and make you feel untouchable while playing.

From Castlevania

From Castlevania IV

From Castlevania Judgment

9. Metal Gear Solid

While later games took it in a more somber direction, the original Metal Gear Solid theme was an action-packed piece. It sounded like the opening to a great spy movie, which was appropriate as MGS is notorious for being more movie than game.

From Metal Gear Solid

8. Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda theme is one of the most recognizable musical cues in all of gaming. Every Zelda game ever made has featured this theme is some form or another, and like Castlevania it has aged beautifully.

From Smash Bros.

Hyrule Field- Twilight Princess

As Orchestrated by John Williams

7. Mario

It's pretty obligatory to have this in here as well, but the Mario theme was what made us all aware of the impact music can have on a game. While the Mario theme has changed over the years, we can't forget where it all started.

Mario Theme

6. Runescape

A little out of left field since this is an MMORPG and not a "video game" per se, but I challenge anybody who has played Runescape to tell me that the main theme is not kick ass.

Original

Most Recent/ Badass
-Note: This will take you to the Runescape website. Couldn't find this version on Youtube and it's EASILY the best.

5. Kingdom Hearts: Destati

Technically not the main theme, but the song that I instantly think of when somebody mentions Kingdom Hearts. Playing during the beginning and end levels of the two PS2 games, Destati is a gripping orchestral and choir piece, equally exciting and chilling and a perfect representation of what those games were capable of... once you got past the Disney voice-acting...

Destati

4. Illusion of Gaia

Maybe I'm biased? Smile

Illusion of Gaia Opening Theme

3. Final Fantasy VIII

I really have to give #3 to this game because of it's nostalgic value if nothing else. Final Fantasy was a game with great music all around, but I found this piece in particular to be a masterpiece. It set the mood perfectly and was probably the most explosive opening to a final fantasy game to date.

Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec

2. Chrono Trigger

Who doesn't remember this theme? One of the most badass pieces of music the SNES ever had in it's library. The original was fantastic, and when it was orchestrated in the PSOne port it was unbelievable.

Chrono Trigger

Opening Movie of the PSOne Port

As heard in Play! A Video Game Music Symphony (starts at 1:45)

-Note: In the Play! Version I love the drum work. There's a guy who is playing a type of drum you use your finger with... pretty damn cool.

1. Halo

Remember how I said a good main theme makes you go "hell yeah". Well it doesn't get anymore "hell yeah" than the main theme from Halo. Often playing during the most intense firefights in the game, when it's just you and your wit battling through dozens of enemies. This is one of my best video game memories of all time.

lol at psychokind Laughing

During like a month i was listening to only SPC files (SNES songs), almost 3000 of them. I'll post the ones i remember, without any particular order:
(I'll assume that tittle themes are also main themes)

Secret of Mana: Fear of the Heavens
This beautiful song is so well made, i like how it starts so calm and then changes, also i like the melody a lot.

Terranigma: Opening
Of course! As psychokind said, this is one of the BEST main themes i have ever heard... this is perhaps the BEST opening theme in the SNES (along with Chrono Trigger)

Chrono Trigger: Opening
Yeah Jason Tandro. This is one of the most epic opening/main themes EVER. The reason? I don't know.. just listen it if you haven't already.

Fire Emblem: Main theme (Monsyo no nazo version [SNES])
To me it sounds pretty epic and 'happy'. It's perfect for a main theme.
The first time i heard this was in Smash Bros Brawl, i didn't like it at all, i hated it xD. But i loved the SNES version when i played it!

Well, these are all i remember for now Smile I will name some others later.

Vampire Killer is all right... Bloody Tears is such a better song, IMO. That metal version kicks ass. Also, I may be the only person in the world who actually enjoyed CV 2.

You're right there, but Vampire Killer basically evolved into the Castlevania Theme... or at least a common anthem.

Then again so did Bloody Tears...

Bloody Tears

From Castlevania 4

From Castlevania Judgment

That song is not bad, but its one of the worst songs in the game (dont missunderstand me, the soundtrack is so good that all songs are good). I am not sure if it deserves to be in this list.
