Not surprising. It costs a lot of money to dump that much technology in a little box, they've gotta cover their costs.
And I just know when I look in the ads in my newspaper, people are going to be selling theirs for even more. Probably about $600 or more. _________________

Nono, they're talking 50,000 yen in Japan. 50,000 yen translates into about $465 USD.
Quote: | Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars. |
That doesn't necessarily means that the PS3 is gonna sell for that much in America. Games in Japan sell for 6800-9000 yen, which is about $60-$80 in USD, and we get them for $50 (unless you count Digital Devil Saga, which cost me almost $60) _________________

Also, didn't the PS2 sell for 1k when it was first released?
Basically, you have to think realistically. No one would buy it if it costed that much, they are targetting the same people they always have. _________________

"According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars."

And here I tought they would price it at around $600. I guess that either they are losing lots of money like MS, a little money(little enough to not kill the company if the PS3 fails), or, which I don't think, the PS3 costs more or less 465 dollars to make. |

I've also heard that it'll go for about $350 or so (can't be bothered looking up the source right now, I'll find it later). That's much more reasonable.
@ Aoiga: $1000 for the PS2? I never saw one go for that much, even in the newspaper ads where people sell them for an inflated price as soon as they can get one. Was there any case of it selling for that much somewhere else that I might not know about? _________________

that's what happened in Australia
the slapped a few accessories and a game with the PS2 when it was first released, the price was about a grand
I waited for a few months for the prices to dropped down to $500 _________________ You're just a human being, my dear, sweet child |

Not only high-tech consoles with $350 - $1000....
Next-generation games too. I heard most companies and stores want to increase retail price on games from $50 to $70 each copy because of "crap your pants" graphics. How we could afford those prices? If they continue to increase prices or anything's out of worthly gameplay, I stop playing video games and back to old game boards, cards, or puzzles.
So I perfer Nintendo's first before others because they plan to keep prices fairly affordable. _________________

I've heard hearsay that they may raise the current price of games by about $20 for the next generation. That would be seriously uncool, because that would add up really fast and hit the wallet hard. It's just a rumour though, and hopefully, that's all it is.
Edit: This is a quote from one of GameSpot's news reports on the PS3.
GameSpot wrote: | When asked if the there was a possibility the design of the prototype PS3 controller--already derisively being called the "batarang"--might be changed before launch, Chatani replied that there may be some "minor changes." However, he said that its form factor will probably stay the same. |
So the batarang controller will probably be what we get. _________________

I could, but no one else but me and Muerte (and anyone else who's around) would see it.
