So I saw HP7, Part 1 last night (by the way I swear Hewlett-Packard paid them advertising bonuses. Observe:
===
I felt that movie 5 and 6 were rushed and that they tried to cram way too much into 2 1/2 hours and so lost an awful lot of important details. (6 in particular). Everybody knows the whole two part thing is a cash grab, but you know what if the trade-off is that they do the final book of Harry Potter right, I'll gladly fork over another $12.
The movie starts out on Hermione, the first time we ever get to see her house, and then fades to the other two as they prepare for their journey. The whole "Dudley's Departing" scene is summed up in five seconds, but they were always secondary characters at best.
The scene ends with Hermione leaving her muggle home and walking down the road, her small beaded bag in tow and the we pan up to the sky where the Harry Potter logo awaits us.
From that point on you find yourself in an almost three hour long adventure, which perfectly captures the scenes of the book, in some cases down to the very lines. As it is a movie some scenes had to be altered and cut short, naturally.
The backstory of Albus Dumbledore is probably the most glaring omission as they only briefly touch up on the controversy but in a way it actually works because it makes the audience feel as confused and lost about that as Harry. Kreacher's Tale is also completely omitted but the biggest dissapointment to me was that the director completely butchered the scene with Grindelwald and Voldemort. He turned Grindelwald's last attempt at redemption into a childish teasing session.
There are some cute scenes that were added too. The Snatchers are wonderfully imagined, there is a cute scene where Harry tries to cheer up Hermione by dancing with her in a tent and... well let's just say nothing prepares you for seeing Daniel Radcliffe in a lacey bra. Oh, and two words: Hermione nude.
As for the story itself, and how much you can expect to see, it follows the story quite well. Like I say some scenes are rushed and removed, but we get to them all. The story of the Deathly Hallows is told in a very interesting manner, in a black and sepia tone CG story cutscene worthy of Tim Burton.
As for how far Part 1 takes you? Well suffice it to say that the director chose the best possible ending point for this movie and by the time the movie ends, the group has arrived at Shell Cottage.
And while it is a very dark and adult movie there are moments of true genius and humor. Dobby is, as always, a great comic relief, Xenophilius is wonderfully imagined (at one point during the movie I called him Pedophilius Lovegood), Mundungus Fletcher, Rufus Scrimgeour and Bill Weasely are all present and accounted for (despite their notable absence in 6). Seriously, it's a wonderful movie, and Harry Potter geeks like me will absolutely love it. _________________ Current Avatar commissioned work by Seiken Arts.

Stopped reading as soon as I realised you'd spoil some things...
Not that I haven't read the book already, but still....<.< _________________

Aww, but Harry Potter is awesome! And if nothing else, at least its not Twilight.
By comparison, the mythology in HP is, oh what's the word...
Oh yeah: Competent. _________________

well, she made me fall for her, so she's clever enough to never have believed that I like harry potter from the beginning. or the zoo. or ice skating. or the dozens of other things I promised I really hope "watching harry potter together" is the last on the list... _________________
