That's Maz's dad, no lie. Both of his parents play WoW. Hell, Maz, myself, and our roommate are in the same guild. Apparently Maz's grandma played WoW too.

thats kind of funny.

and tay: your parents sound AWESOME. not that i have any problem with my parents, but thats just cool how they play games with you.

i remember once my mum tried to play DKC3 with me, she was like "what's that spinning thing next to me? it hurts my eyes". that "spinning thing" was me (playing as dixie).

Psychokind, your head would explode if you had my parents. My dad practically taught me how to play Zelda, though he spends most of his time on Warcraft 3 now, and back in high school my mom would pour a glass of wine and watch me play Grand Theft Auto. Currently, we're watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood together. Very Happy

it definetely would Very Happy my father calls anime "japanese faggot shit". he didn't ever catch me watching it though. strange that you have to hide anime more than porn Laughing

It sounds like you have your idealism from your parents. Razz

I once asked my sister if she wanted to watch an anime with me, she got embarrassed and refused XD

@Tay, your parents are awesome Very Happy My mother couldn't care less about games :/ My dad plays some games, but his interests are kinda limited to Yoshi's Island Razz

@SoulBlazerFan, totally agree that gaming is just another medium of entertainment. Dopey

This ground, surprisingly has been tread several times in the past. It's a coming of age in the industry where gaming evolves from a kind of entertainment to a recognized art form. We have seen this happening with music, books, radio and TV. What the gaming industry needs is to grow some balls, and stand up against the media harpies and point out the hypocrisy of the moral outrage while ignoring, and sometimes endorsing far less tasteful forms of exploitation in films, music and artwork.

I think one of the larger problems here is the level of investment a video game project takes when compared to other forms of entertainment. Yeah, Hollywood movies are expensive, but many significant and risque films have been made on the cheap. Many developers don't want to risk not following society's curve. They take the heat and play it safe both on the gameplay front and on the content front. Then when something shocking IS added, its usually just for shock value, and rarely for artistic value.

Then again, the Indie scene is starting to gain some momentum, and EA's Partners Program is doing a lot of good for studios looking to get financial backing. (It's amazing that EA is the company I've been most impressed with lately. That shouldn't happen.) Anyway, more companies need to take that example and bring in smaller companies and Indie developers. With the digital market getting bigger and bigger, now's the time to experiment on what can and can't work. I really see this as the way gaming will slowly mature, though at the rate we're going, we may be at it for another decade or more.

don't forget that most of TV's new entertainment is mostly immature bullshit that shouldn't be watched or even recognized by people that call themselves parents. think of fake-reality and "underclass-television" (there's even a german word for that!).

i'd much rather play a videogame than watch a tv series. one, im likely to get more enjoyment (plot-wise and in general) from the videogame, and at least my mind is being stimulated. its not like im sitting on the couch and feeling my ass grow.

Yeah man. Watching people trying to get laid through television is rather childish. My brother watches Paradise Hotel in desperate hope of seeing a boob or an ass. I told him to just download some porn to save him the trouble

I actually watch several different TV shows myself. Dexter, for one, is an amazing show and a spin on TV I really have never seen before. It's not like other anti-heroes, who kill only when they have to. This guy kills because he needs to, and only kills other people who kill.

Law and Order: SVU while predictable in its back and forth whodunnit routine, works because the cast is perfect.

I also watch Smallville and Supernatural, two awesome (and underrated) shows.

I just got into Psych, too.

I'm just saying, you shouldn't knock TV. There are some great shows out there. Just gotta give 'em a try. Very Happy

I didn't mean to knock tv. What I meant to say was that just like there can be childish games, there can be childish tv shows. Every hobby can be viewed as childish, if you're stubborn enough. Playing an instrument can be viewed as making childish sounds... Ploink ploink!

I used to watch a great deal of TV. Not any more, because I moved to Holland and all the shows are in Dutch ;_;

I've had a professor who dislikes video games because they're not practical, but when I pushed him to explain the difference between a simulation and a game (they're fairly similar to the point where you sometimes can't distinguish between the two; Myst and combat shooters fall into this category), he couldn't or refused to explain it.

Video games are fine as hobbies. They're fine even if they're violent because we all know video games aren't real. They're fine if you switch the language in an attempt to learn it. If you can be obsessed with a video game, you can be obsessed with movies or books too. I know a few people like that.

As people have said, the only time where video gaming becomes unhealthy is if it becomes the main priority of your life (unless, of course, you make a living out of making these games).

I think alot of people, whether it be back in the day or even today, like to argue things simply for arguements sake, and no other. Thats why if you challenge them to explain, they can't answer- it isn't about their reasons, but their need to be opinionated and be right. It's sad, really... they don't know what their missing.
