Look closer. Its not a sword but a naginata. The handle is obscured by the background.

I was sure his sweater made him immortal. 
So, it sucks, but I suppose it was to be expected. His health has been bad for a while... bad enough to force him to resign. People had to know he probably didn't have a lot of time.
