Well, if welfare must end, then all those poor people who use their welfare checks to eat food and live might be out of luck, hm.

Just because people have the potential to abuse it doesn't mean the needy who actually need it to live deserve to have it taken away.

More people abuse it than use it for the actual use though. Which is sad - if the government will pay for everything, why work? Why do anything that requires work if they'll be fully funded.

I'm sure if I looked I could find the picture of the girl (17-19 years old, somewhere in there) that used her child support check on new Ugg boots and a full-out manicure and posted them on FB, saying that she used her child support check for that.

THOSE are the people that should be kicked out, not the people that have legit reasons to be on welfare and are actually trying to get back on their feet so they don't have to be.

Sure it's a platform for greed, but the greedy people are the ones who ruin it for the people who actually need it - single moms and dads, older people, the homeless ... etc.

As with most of my shortsighted or harsh opinions this one has mellowed out over the years. My friend Heather is a working single mother who gets government aid. She is exactly the kind of person who deserves welfare and i'll admit that at its core welfare is a good idea but again the lazy slobs ruin it for those who need it.

This is where I can agree. The people who actually need it should be getting the benefits. Not the people that go "oh I can just pop out another kid with some dude and I'll have $1500 to my name from welfare and I won't have to work!"

I'm sure I said it earlier in the thread, but I'll say it again: it happens. My fiance saw it while he was doing missionary work. He saw it 90% of the time. He saw people turn down $20/hr working at McDonalds because "Oh then I won't get my welfare check!" I'd work at Mickey D's for $20/hr, it's $8 more than I'm making now! But that pesky work thing gets in the way for the lazy slobs, and makes the people who actually need the assistance look terrible for needing it.

I still mad. Then again, I work at a grocery store where I get to see the nicely "I shopped at Dillards" dressed people with their $200 manicures and haircuts going "whoop better use that food stamp card!" I have a lot of rage on this issue. Especially when people are turned down because they "made too much" in their 30+ years of work to get food stamps, or only get $10 a week. If anything, the system needs a HUGE change to actually be helping those in need and kick out those who are mooching off the system.

I think there should be assessments of people who are on welfare. If you're taking advantage of it, you get booted. Obviously, it would be near impossible to properly regulate, but in an ideal world welfare would only be given to those who truly deserve / need it.

I'm sure there's steps they could take to alleviate some of the stress on the system itself; the problem is that they haven't.

Someone I know suggested that people who are looking to get on welfare should be subject to drug tests. I know some people might gasp at the idea, but in all fairness, some places in order to get a job you need to take a drug test, so why not from getting money from the government? That would weed out some of the fat that is weighing down the welfare system.

i think before suggesting to drop people out of welfare, you should think about what those people will then do for a living. good portion of them will start committing crimes, which in the end costs more than paying them off.

for germany, the actual fuckups that live only of welfare are either sick, german "hillbillys" and foreigners. the actual sum they get paid is peanuts in federal budget. if you compare it with health costs for obese, or welfare for people, who work fulltime but get so minimal wage they can't live by, it's pretty neglectable.
