I may have mentioned this earlier but I've been away for a short while. I am studying Japanese.

Right now I have a very limited vocabulary, as is expected of a new learner.

For some reason the book starts with conjugation and grammar, which I guess makes sense but it seems to me if you can master that, the rest is just knowing the actual words (which I suppose is the point.)

I don't suppose there are any others who are familiar with the language or are also studying who want a study buddy?

I got some learning software a few years ago, but have yet to use it. I don't have a lot of time to mess with things in the Autumn months, but if I decide to start it up, I'll let you know!

Ive tried studying on and off for years and my knowledge never grows wanted it on my schedule but it had way too many credits. ONE day i'll tackle the course. Best of luck to you

Study is sporadic for me but it does move forward. I have memorized 18 Hiragana characters over the course of four days which to me is a pretty big deal. I'm hoping to have memorized all the basic Hiragana by the end of the month.

As far as speaking, no new words or phrases but to be fair they've railroaded me with grammar. The problem I have with grammar is without context it's useless and I find it silly that they started the lesson with grammar. Then again, going forward I should have an easier time with it, so I suppose there is a payoff.

But when I watch animuus, theres an occasional phrase that pops up that I recall

@Jason: when I took Japanese in high school, my teacher gave us sheets of mnemonics to help us with not only pronunciation, but how to write each one. We usually got two sections every couple of days (aiueo/kakikukeko, sashisuseso/tachitsuteto, and so on and so forth.) Once you get to Katakana, it's not bad; most Katakana are carbon copies of their Hiragana counterpart (kana カ vs Hiragana か. Same way to write it pretty much.) So for "ka" it was "that kid is riding on a shopping CArt" since the "ca" part in "cart" is the same way you pronounce "ka" in Japanese. Interesting way to retain it tbh.

@psycho: hisashiburi, you were close! but yes, it does mean "long time no see".

I really should continue in translating stuff, it helps with retaining the language. When I got my FFIVDS soundtrack in, I translated all of the track names, took me about 3 hours. I started translating one of my doujin too, but I don't know where my notes went on that.

True dat, Psycho, dunno what's up with me lately.

For the final exam of the course, I managed to memorise every Katakana in 1 long evening of studying, I got 80 % correct the next day.
It's all gone now, sadly
But there are many good wasy to memorise this easily!
