Maybe I am remembering incorrectly. Smile

Final day in an English release, but "Final Time" in Japanese. I'm guessing mistranslation, or smushed letter space in the text box we can't see on screen.

Awesome thread, I just wanted to add something. I hope it's a new bit of info, if not, I'm sorry.

Berūga, with the long "u", just like in the Japanese version means Delphinapterus Leucas (Greek for white winged dolphin, commonly called beluga). You can view some photos of them searching on Google ベルーガ (Beruga's name in Japanese).

Exclamation Later Edit: "Beluga" actually comes from Russian (белуга) and it means WHITE! So the RUSSIAN mad scientist Beruga has a Russian name that means "white" (in Russian Laughing).

The "-holm" part in both Stockholm and Crystalholm comes from the Old Norse and it means "small island".

Something funny: ストーク (the "Sutōku" part in the Japanese "Stockholm") is also the Japanese reading of "(to) stalk" (think of what Elle's parents and actually all the village suffered!).

In Swedish, the first part of the city's name (Stock-) means "log" - so a piece of something dead, symbolically extremely earth-bound.
Crystal, on the other hand, something very air-bound (to say so). The cities are in this way opposites of the side they are found on, but the names make sense for the hero, for Ark.
Why? 'Coz in Stockholm he was almost killed, if I remember right and Crysta is the pure, beautiful town of his childhood (IF you're not thinking of the bloodish-red phase before the battle with Dark Gaia).

I'll post more if I remember...

Sorry for the double post, but it's something new and I like to make my posts to be easily read (a.k.a. not boring).

~~~ Elle ~~~
Elle is actually エル (El/L) in the Japanese version. Japanese fans speculate that this is intentional: it means God in Semitic languages (more info).
At Astarica, Elle is on her way to becoming a god, btw.
~~~ Marily ~~~
She is the blonde girl working for Madame Papilo.
Her name is not Marily. In Japanese, her name is マドレーヌ (Madeleine, just like the French muffin). Why is this important? You guessed right, because a real ingenious French fashion designer was Madeleine Vionnet (more info here).[/url]

~~~ Madame Papilo ~~~
Actually, it's Madame Papillon in the original Japanese version. "Papillon" means butterfly in French. Also, it is the name of the bow tie. the bow tie was a very important accessory in the aristocracy – and even today it is considered a lot more elegant than the tie. The papillon/bow tie was invented in France, btw.
Yeah though I personally know some chinese and all can pronounce R and L without any difficulties lol.
The writers of A Christmas Story have led us astray!!!
I agree with Coz that it could partially be a reference to religious zealousness, but foremostly it's of course a play on 'Mosukuwa', Moscow.
Glad someone mentioned モスクワ = Moscow. I suspect that it's purely coincidence that モスク = mosque, and "a truncated form of Moscow" was all the developers were going for. The English rendition of the Russian capital's name name is butchery, I might add.
Yeah, the Russian for Moscow is Moskva, isn't it?
I think that the developer's were trying to translate it as Moscow, but overlooked the final kanji and so accidentally translated as Mosque instead. Because if they did it deliberately, they could face some accusations of attempting to show Islam to be evil (which I'm sure is something they wouldn't really wanna get into).
*Hopes he didn't start a huge flamewar*
the russian would make sense. i always wondered why it was called mosque. moscow would make more sense...
and белуга means 'sturgeon'. the name does seem to take derivative from the word 'white' (белый, белая)
I think the name "Elle" refers to the scale unit
Ell, used for Noah's Ark.
The German word is even "Elle".
Die Arche war gemäß dem Bibelbericht (Gen 6,14 EU) 300 Ellen lang, 50 Ellen breit und 30 Ellen hoch
I think psychokind is right, but as I stated in my OP, that was the Japanese fans suggestion (El, the Semitic God). That's all. Remember that in Japanese, the original release, the name is El (which can mean "EL" or just the reading of the "L" letter). If they wished, the Japanese could say Elle (it *is* possible): エッレ. But they didn't.
Never heard of the unit Ell, good to know, but i doubt the creators of the game named the female tragic counterpart "elbow" in protoindoeuropean. Because that unit of measurement isn't used *just* for bible stuff. Actually it wasn't used in bible. That's just used after the Reform, when the language used the units and expressions in common language for bible stuff. As it's stated in the link you gave, the unit was used in NW Europe and England, in Medieval times.
