So prices for this console are down to ~ 100 €, and I'm thinking of getting myself one.
So my question to you, fellow TE'ians is, shoguld I get it? Or not?
Are there any good games on it? (I never had a PS, and I know almost nothing about its series)
OR do you know a good emulator and a PC joypad which could give me almost the same gaming experiance...?
Your opinion about this console, its games, and my plans? |

The PlayStation 2 is, in my opinion, the second greatest video game console. (the first being the SNES) It has more game variety and diversity than easily any other system, so it is nearly impossible to be unable to find at least one game you like.
I would recommend the Kingdom Hearts series, being that they are Action/RPG like the Soul Blazer series. Other good games are Shadow of the Colossus (a zelda-esque title in which you only fight huge bosses), Katamari Damacy/We Heart Katamari (a game in which you roll a giant ball), Okami (another zelda-esque title that's very artistic), Final Fantasy X or XII, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (the best ninja game ever), DragonBall Z Budokai 3 (the best DBZ game if you like anime), Soul Calibur II (probably the best fighter on the PS2), Beyond Good and Evil (a tomb raider-esque title about uncovering a government conspiracy), Lego Star Wars (best star wars games ever), Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (a very loooooong RPG), .hack (seven inter-locking J-RPGs set in an MMO world), Xenosaga (three interlocking J-RPGs with a focus on Mecha), then if you like older games, I'd reccomend Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Mega Man Anniversary Collection, Mega Man X Collection, and Namco Museum.
So, to review:
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts II
Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy
We Heart Katamari
Okami
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
DragonBall Z Budokai 3
Soul Calibur II
Beyond Good and Evil
Lego Star Wars
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
.hack
Xenosaga
Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Mega Man Anniversary Collection
Mega Man X Collection
Namco Museum
Hopefully this helps... _________________

It does help me! Thanks!
Talking about games, how are the Devil May Cry games?
Something else: are there any technical flaws in the console? A friend of mine told me that PS2's don't last that long due to some production flaws...?
AND (most important, since it's money saving) is there a way to Mod a PS2 so I don't have to buy all those games? Or is there a good PS2 emulator and joypad who provide me with the same game feeling? |

Devil May Cry is good. The first one is decent, the second one most people didn't like, but was ok, and the third one is the best. Also, if you like Action games God of War I & II are fantastic.
As for system bugs...
I'm going to go ahead and assume you'll be buying a new PS2. I have yet to hear any problems with the PS2 Slim 9000 series, so you should be good. It has more internal cooling than the original PS2 Slim models, and since overheating was the main problem with the Slim models, you should be fine.
As for mods, you can mod an Original (large model) PS2, but the older PS2s tend to be unstable, and have trouble playing later games such as Kingdom Hearts 2, God of War 2, Xenosaga 3, and Final Fantasy XII. There exist roms for PC, but they are extremely difficult to find and even more difficult to run successfully. However, Logitech has released PS2 controllers for PC, so if you do find roms, you can play them naturally. _________________

LONG LIST OF DOOM:
Persona 3 (where high school kids SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE HEAD to summon monsters to fight for them)
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts II (or rather, known as Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Shadow Hearts III (or, Shadow Hearts: From the New World)
Ar Tonelico
Atelier Iris (all three games)
Rogue Galaxy
Fatal Frame (all three, they're horror games )
Tales of Abyss
Tales of Legendia
Okage: Shadow King
Wild Arms 3-5, Alter Code: F (because I love me some Wild Arms)
Dragon Quest 8
Magna Carta
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Valkyrie Profile 2
If I think of any others, I'll let you know.
Also, Tay: Star Ocean isn't just LONG like longcat, you left out that it's STUPIDLY HARD TOO. Just what I expected from a Star Ocean title. _________________

I got PS2 slimline (model no. SCPH-70012) since I bought it with Front Mission 2. Only problem I had with it is sometime it lost the connection with PS2 controllers. I dont know why my own PS2 doing to me like that.
Metal Gear Solid series. Konami re-released MGS 1 - 3 as MGS: The Essential Collection for $30 (that's $10 per a game). MGS 1 come in PS2 disc instead of 2 PS1 discs.
War of Monsters if you like Super Smash Bros games.
Grand Theft Auto series. Miniguns and chainsaw, anyone? _________________

They are, but they get rather repetitive, so if you plan on playing them, you'd better love J-RPGs. _________________

If you do end up getting it, guitar hero is probably a must buy. I got my ps2 for guitar hero 3 and couldnt stop playing the game for months. Just about to get the latest installment for ps2.
Other good games hrm.... I didnt end up getting stuck into many ps2 games but a lot of the shooters/thrillers like silent hill 1/2/3 etc (duno what theyre up to) are worth a look i reckon. _________________

Guitar Hero is awesome, but if you're going to play it, I'd recommend the PS3 or 360 versions instead. They have more songs, downloadable content, and a higher quality of gameplay. It really only matters though if you're getting GH 3 or World Tour. Guitar Hero 2 is still pretty good on the PS2. _________________

I don't think I'll buy it...I've got too many (expensive) hobbies and no money at all...
There are still enough games on the PC I want to play, and some have to step back.
Also, I'm gonna rejoin my old band, which means and old (and again, expensive) hobby is coming back...*need teh gear now*
I'll keep this thread as a gamelibrary though, if I'd ever get to buy a PS2... |
