Okay some people just don't know what they're doing when they're shipping, packing boxes and loading skids. So here is a nice compendium of what to do:

Packing the Box

1. Either use a sensible-sized box for what you are shipping, or use a uniform box size for all products in one skid.
This is one of the biggest problem. I had five skids of medium sized boxes. These boxes had four books in them and then were packed two feet high with packing material! Read on to number two.

2. You do not need to go overboard with packing material.
If an object is not "fragile" then a single layer of protecting material will do wonders.

3. Use reasonable packing material.
When it comes to packing stuff, there is only one good thing. Bubble wrap. Okay? That's it. Packing foam and cardboard paper take up a lot of space in the trash, the shredded carboard has to be baled and EVERYBODY hates those damned peanuts.

When Loading a Skid:

1. Stack the boxes EVENLY and according to weight.
You would not believe how many people stack light boxes on the bottom and heavy boxes on top!

2. Whenever possible please keep the count on each level of a skid consistent.
We have to count every box that comes in even when it comes in on a skid, so uniformity saves us some time.

When labeling boxes:

1. Make sure the following things are PRESENT and VISIBLE:
a. PO #
b. Carton Number
c. Total Carton Number
These three things are critical when sorting. Also Shipment Number would be handy too. Also so many large orders come in where they don't bother telling us the Total Carton number.

2. Clearly label which box per group has the Packing Slip.
We need to be able to find that easily, people!

3. If you are re-labeling an order, don't just label each box 1 of 1.
So many people I know do that to save time. DON'T BE LAZY!

Good tips and all... but how does this effect your job at a hotel, if I may ask?
