I've beaten Illusion of Gaia many times (including Gem's Mansion) without using any herbs at all. There's a method of taking down Solid Arm, if you want to see it, go to this page to see it.

He has a complete video walkthrough for Illusion of Gaia, and that video walkthrough, by far, is the best one you're going to get.

I've done that too, going through the whole game without using any herbs; I spent about 20-30 minutes just Psycho Sliding back and forth across the floor to kill Solid Arm, and gave myself a helluva palm-cramp in the process.

A better challenge for IoG, I think, is to simultaneously try to go through the game without improving your stats any. They'll still automatically get boosted a bit when you down each boss, but it certainly adds to the challenge of the dungeons and bosses.
