In the past 2 years, I've noticed something...
I've played games on the Pc, Halflife 2, Far Cry, Splintercell 2, Star Wars Jedi Academy, Mafia,...
Great games, I enjoyed playing them, but something is missing...
Old Snes games like Terranigma, Zelda A link to the past, Donkey Kong Country 2+3, Yoshis Island,...I will never forget these games, the story, the music....
Thats what the new games don't have...
But WHY don't they have it?
Its not because they aren't RPgames, cuz Yoshis Island and Donkey Kong also aren't RPGs.
Is it because I dont enjoy them? Do I have to play them more often?
Is it because of the high end graphics? Are these games TOO realistic?
...or (and thats what I'm afraid of)
Am I too old (17) for videogames? I played these games when I was 8-12 years old, maybe I CANT enjoy the anymore....
Is it because of the other things I have to tae care of? Girlfriend, playing Guitar, school, friends, music, going out,...
What do you think? Do you have simillar problems? |

i've found that too ... just as you get older games become less enjoyable ... it happens to most of us ... only one i can really play anymore now is tekken ... to try and one day beat axe ... chances of that are 0.01% ... but hey ... its worth a shot
you'll still play games ... enjoy them ... it they will all feel like they are lacking something _________________ It's high time I revised this signature. |

The people who used to make games are dead or retired. Now people want something new. I get the same feeling when playing old games. Its because they are better games. |

I don't know about that... the majority of games that we are talking about are not THAT old. Sure maybe some of them are retired. _________________

It's a little of both. As you grow up, yes... you will probably outgrow video games. Fortunately, I don't think I've gotten there yet... which is good, because I grew up with a lot of them.
You mentioned that you have other things to take care of, and that'll be part of it too. Priorities, and all.
But I think the main reason is that innovation is so much harder to pull off, especially with an aging group of gamers. Most of what can be done (and still be especially entertaining) probably already HAS been done. Those games you mentioned were timeless classics, and were such a blast because we had never seen anything like them before.
But now, we have. And it's hard to make lightning strike twice. The bar has been set so high, it's virtually impossible to match it. And as we gamers grow older, we get more critical of the games; we just don't enjoy them like we used to (fanboyism is a good piece of evidence). Every now and then, a great piece of work comes along, but it's just not the same.
Personally, I prefer the Gamecube because I find it stays more true to the roots of the old days. Those were days when games weren't meant to be a movie and a game at the same time.
It'll be a sad day when/if I give up games. But I'll hang in there as long as I can. _________________

I see your point...I cant enjoy the new games because my requirements are too high...
They're the coolest games for 10-year-old because they had nothing else yet.

Describe what you mean with 'movie', because especially Terranigma was a game that was more than just running around and killing people.
Terranigma delivers you with different feelings nonstop.
And I'd say only movies can do the same thing...just that YOU are the Hero, you controll him, you are in the game, you feel proud, scared, shocked, etc... |

I meant games that are all about looks and not about gameplay. Games where most of the focus seems to have gone in to the cutscenes, but plays like crap.
But I also meant games that are based on actual movies themselves. They're usually especially bad, because they often have very little to do with the movie, and are usually just used for cheap marketing. 3 examples off the top of my head are Polar Express (which has no business being a game in the first place), Fight Club and Catwoman. There are more, trust me. _________________

Nobody watched Tomb Raider because it was a game-to-movie jump, they watched it for boobies. _________________

games not movies... it reminds me of Xenogears, even though it had some enjoyable moments sometimes I forgot that I was playing a game because those cut sceans were so long. _________________
