Looks like opinion on him is divided quite a bit.... not like John Paul II, who pretty much everyone seemed to love. Of course, there'll never be another John Paul II.
Time will tell, I guess. _________________

He grew up in the same hostile environment John Paul II grew up in so hopefully he gained from it what John Paul II gained. ^_^ _________________

I meant time will tell for the new guy.
The man is 78 years old. John Paul II served 26 years, if I'm not mistaken. It's very doubtful that Ratzinger will do as much as John Paul II did, especially since opinion on him is so mixed. It's doubtful anyone will match John Paull II's legacy. _________________

I think he will be fine.
And I think it's unfair to compare popes. Every pope does it right in their own way.
Also, I bet that everybody said more or less the same when the pope before this was elected, and the pope before, and the pope before.... |

Mr. Ratzinger must have served at the "Hitler Youth", I wonder if he saw Adolf Hitler or even shaked his hand. |

He was forced in to it against his will early on, then left near the end of the war (risky, since people leaving were seen as traitors and shot if they were found out). If he did ever shake Hitler's hand, it wasn't because he wanted to. _________________

It's not like it was an honor to shake the guy's hand anyway. _________________

Pope Jean Paul was a communist and he single handedly brought it down on his own.
Ratzinger may have been forced to be in Hitlers Youth, but he could still hold some morals. Until we start seeing things from him, there will always be split opinions. _________________ I am... |

I think I read that he actually entered before it was obligatory to enter Hitlers Youth. However I did read in the same article that he didn't liked it much, and he never fired a weapon, but not not because he refused(dunno if he would have refused tought), but because his finger was hurt. |

Quote: | he actually entered before it was obligatory to enter Hitlers Youth | I read that too. However there are many statements, how about this one:
Mr. R. entered Hitlers Youth and served at the war. As Germany was about to completely lose the war and the glorious Red Army ( ) was approaching, he left Germany (like many others did) so the Soviets couldn't catch him and submitted to the church to be save and to prevent punishment.
Therfore he Quote: | still hold(s) some morals | and stands for a very conservative way of thinking... |

Could it be possible a German person could NOT have wanted to join Hitler's Nazi Youth?
He was forced to join and he tried to escape twice. I don't think there is any need to continually question whether or not he wanted to (he said he didn't, for some reason I like to trust people) because I doubt he would try to join it now. _________________
