on a serious note, I had heard that he'd been ill for quite some time (cancer?), apart from the oncoming wordplays ("seems like the job is done") I'm unbothered by it.

Look closer. Its not a sword but a naginata. The handle is obscured by the background.

So, it sucks, but I suppose it was to be expected. His health has been bad for a while... bad enough to force him to resign. People had to know he probably didn't have a lot of time.
