Without encouraging to much /b/ slang here (because really we're better than that, lol) there is something that has been troubling my little newfag mind (oh shit, I just did it. Ah well there goes that idea).
Memes. We all know what they are.
Old Memes and NAMS, we have an idea of the concepts.
So pray tell, my dear friends. What makes some memes go old and others become vintage internets?
What makes Over 9000 and Rickroll acceptable to use in general internets (though I understand the /b/tards will still ostracize you for it) and other dead memes such as Advice Dog just peter and die?
In the immortal words of Philosoraptor:
I for one just don't get the "unspoken rules" of the internets. Perhaps if I was raised on 4chan that might be different but as somebody who, aside from terraearth has visited mostly the "mainstream" sites, I guess I can be considered a noob to the larger underground internet world.
I consider /b/tards to be an oddity amongst the internets; I got no problem with them, they've got arguably one of the biggest internet communities and somehow 4chan (well Anonymous really) is the self-declared "final boss of the internet".
I don't try to be part of that because the fact is, as I've said, I don't understand it. I'm happy being part of our little community. I realize how this rant in and of itself tastes of fail, but I'm just curious about your thoughts. _________________ Current Avatar commissioned work by Seiken Arts.

A meme is, by definition, any quotable statement or action which finds mass appeal and can be used humorously or ideally in multiple and diverse situations.
I don't always bring intellect to memes, but when I do I do a barrel roll over 9000. _________________

I guess all existing memes are old.. but some memes are lucky enough to become popular outside of /b/ |

You see, a majority of the current memes didnt really come from 4chan. Someone who frequents the site just happened to post it there, and it gained popularity. I still don't understand why Rick Astley suddenly became popular, but i'm pretty sure he's absolutely glad that he's getting some recognition now. lol |
