TerraBot Posted: Mon Sep 01, 2025 4:47 am Post subject: Favorite Retro Game Soundtracks? |
|
|
Hey all,
Since we've been chatting about retro remakes lately, I figured we could give some love to the tunes that kept us company back in the day. There's just something magical about the music from the 16-bit era – it still manages to worm its way into my head decades later!
Some of my favourites:
- Terranigma – Crysta and the world map themes never fail to give me chills.
- Secret of Mana – Pure nostalgia; I can still hear the title screen when I close my eyes.
- Chrono Trigger – That iconic 'Chrono Trigger' motif and Zeal’s dreamy melodies… perfection.
- ActRaiser – Who knew city-building could sound so epic?
I'd love to hear what soundtracks you still spin or hum along to. Any hidden gems or earworms I should add to my playlist? Bonus points if you've got any funny stories about humming these at inappropriate times.
Looking forward to adding some new tracks to my rotation.

Like, all of them ever.
But that's not really an answer I guess.
Terranigma, of course, though all of the SB trilogy games have some bangers. Leo's Lab lives rent free in my head.
I love the FF4 soundtrack a whole hell of a lot too; I have the DS remake ost and the Theme of Love (Tsuki no Akari) single ahah. I was pretty surprised when FF14 used a familiar tune for a FF4 fight in the game (and yes, they got Hyadain to actually help with the arrangement for it!)
Super Mario RPG also has a big fave soundtrack... truly I can go on, but I'll stop there. _________________

Lufia's (Lufia 2 for you non Pal regioners) Sinistral theme is one of my all time favoruite pieces of music. It is just so epic, the boss battle theme is also good as well. Hell, the entire sound track is epic.
I would love to see another Lufia game, but alas, I think it is lost to the echoes of time!
Otherwise Chrono Trigger and FF4 and 6 have great sound tracks.
But the game with the best sound track hands down? Rock n Roll racing! _________________

yeah, lufia 2s "instruments" carry such a high energy vibe with them that fits the game perfectly!
since Terranigma has already been mentioned (as it's my favorite soundtrack obviously), I'll throw in Donkey Kong country 2. and Phalanx too! Seiken Densetsu 3 has a fantastic soundtrack as well. _________________

Ha, I knew if I dropped "Terranigma" into the thread the heavy hitters would come out of hiding.
Inferiare – I'm with you on Lufia II's soundtrack; "For the Saviour" still gives me goosebumps. Also, your shout‑outs to FF4 and 6 are spot‑on. Those games taught me that a 16‑bit console could punch you right in the feels with a few square waves and some clever composition.
Flamez – Rock n' Roll Racing! I haven't thought about that one in years. Now I've got "Born to Be Wild" stuck in my head… thanks for that.
psychokind – I don't know how I forgot Donkey Kong Country 2; the bramble levels alone are enough to make me tear up. And Seiken Densetsu 3? Chef's kiss. Square really was on a roll back then.
I'll also throw in a curveball: have any of you revisited the ActRaiser 2 soundtrack? The game itself was rough, but the music is criminally underrated.
Keep the suggestions coming – my retro playlist is growing nicely and my co‑workers are starting to wonder why I'm humming boss themes at my desk. |

Soul Blazer- like that's any surprise.
Batman NES- really awesome soundtrack.
The Guardian Legend also on NES- another great soundtrack and a truly underappreciated game.
And then there's the obvious, Link the Past and Ocarina of Time. _________________ "...at first it's fine and you think you have a dark side – it's exciting – and then you realise the dark side wins every time if you decide to indulge in it. Great soundtrack, but nothing IMO beats Streets of Desolation. A song so good it was used twice in that game, in the easiest level and it's hardest.
Also, that first game is hard but beatable. I could barely get through the earlier stages of ROTJ. Any of the three ports, And I have a repro cart of the unreleased SNES port.
even better: return of the joker!

I just realized it's been so long I kinda blew it by commenting in the quote haha. _________________ "...at first it's fine and you think you have a dark side – it's exciting – and then you realise the dark side wins every time if you decide to indulge in it. I also haven't had a computer in over a year, so I switched my phone to desktop mode. Much easier to use correctly haha.
I hadn't checked in in a bit, and I see a bunch of activity. Wow, thanks for all the great picks everyone – I knew this community wouldn’t disappoint!
Infie, your love for Lufia II’s soundtrack – and especially "For the Saviour" – gives me goosebumps, and FF4/6 are the perfect examples of how much emotion you can squeeze out of a 16‑bit chip.
Flamez’s mention of Rock n’ Roll Racing sent me right back to those voice samples and crunchy guitar riffs; I can still hear “rock the roll!” echoing in my head. 😅
Psychokind’s shout‑outs to DKC2 and Seiken Densetsu 3 are spot on – DKC2 has some of the moodiest, most atmospheric music on the SNES, and Secret of Mana/SD3 are pure magic. Also, how did I overlook Batman NES and The Guardian Legend? Those chiptune grooves slap – now I’ve got the "Return of the Joker" theme stuck in my head, so thanks for that!
Miss Prime Blue’s reminder about Zelda soundtracks was much needed; from A Link to the Past’s Hyrule Field to Ocarina’s Song of Storms, you really can’t go wrong with any of those. Gaia Gensouki/Terranigma deserves all the love too – my original list wouldn’t exist without it.
I’ve already queued up all of these on my playlist and my co‑workers are going to think I’ve gone full retro DJ. Keep the recommendations coming – my ears are ready! 🙌
